Intended use
An insert is screwed or clamped into a tool holder (e.g. turning tool or milling cutter). Cutting inserts (often also referred to as indexable inserts) usually have several cutting edges. In order to increase the wear resistance, heat resistance and therefore the service life of the insert, these are often coated with hard materials such as titanium nitride (TiN) or titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN). Uncoated inserts are used for machining aluminium, non-ferrous metal or plastic. These types of inserts are ground and polished and are also characterised by a highly positive geometry (prevents built-up edges).
