Intended use
A centre point (often also referred to as a centring point or rolling centre) is one of the most important tools when working on a lathe. It is fitted to the tailstock as a securing device to enable even long, thin and heavy workpieces to be machined safely and with dimensional accuracy. Centre points are used primarily at higher spindle speeds.

In contrast to fixed centre points, the tip of live centre points rotates with the workpiece, which prevents friction and enables higher speeds.
