Intended use
The SIEG SX3.5Z is a drilling/milling machine for use in the high-end hobby and semi-professional sector. Due to its versatile application possibilities, this machine is used in functional modelling, in individual and small series production or in prototype construction. The drilling/milling machine is designed for machining steel, cast iron, all non-ferrous metals, aluminium, brass, etc., but can also be used for machining plastics or similar materials that are not hazardous to health or generate dust.

Description of the
The SIEG SX3.5Z drilling/milling machine offers a wide range of applications. The machine is driven by a brushless DC motor with dynamic control. This control system ensures a high torque at all speeds. The speed range of the SX3.5Z is covered by two belt positions with different belt types. In the low speed range from 80 to 1,500 rpm, the work spindle is driven by a toothed belt, which ensures a slip-free drive. In the high speed range from 280 to 5,000 rpm, the drive is provided by a (V) ribbed belt. Due to their flexibility, V-ribbed belts are very smooth-running and low-vibration, even at high belt speeds. The spindle speed is infinitely variable in both speed ranges. The machine has a "thread-cutting function", which enables the direction of rotation of the spindle to be changed immediately at the touch of a button. The electric drive of the Z-axis of the SX3.5Z, which is powered by a separate electric motor, should be emphasised. The height of the milling head is adjusted at the push of a button, not by cranking the handwheel. This makes it much easier to adjust the solid milling head upwards. The end positions of the milling head are defined by safety limit switches. The machine also has a fine feed, which can only be used to move the quill in the Z direction. For drilling work, the quill is fed via the star grip on the side. The travel of the quill can be read on the digital drilling depth display. The work spindle has a user-friendly SK30 tool holder. The dovetail guides on the X, Y and Z axes can be adjusted backlash-free using wedge strips. The 740 x 180 mm worktable has three T-slots (12 mm / M10) for clamping workpieces or clamping devices. The worktable is adjusted in the X and Y axes using handwheels with verniers. These are made of anodised aluminium. There is a magnetic tool pad on the right-hand side of the Z-column.
This milling machine is supplied with a glass scale measuring system already installed. In addition to the versatile functions of a measuring system, this is used to display the actual position of a workpiece or tool in a coordinate system. The display and control unit is equipped with a 7 inch (18 cm) LCD screen and various function keys. The screen is attached to the Z-column of the milling machine via a swivelling arm. There is also a practical tool tray below the display unit. The X, Y and Z axes of the machine are equipped with glass scales. The fourth axis of the measuring system can be used for optional accessories, such as a rotary table. The measuring system is characterised by very extensive functions and display options. Selected functions are shown graphically on the display for better understanding. The position display offers the option of choosing between turning, milling and grinding mode. The languages available are German, English, Spanish, French and Chinese.

- Inclined contour / surface: Milling of phases or diagonal surfaces
- Setting any number of holes at an even distance on a straight line (SHL function)
- Milling a radius or circular arc
- Representation of a bolt hole circle for evenly spaced holes on a circular arc
- Determining the centre point between two points
- The following functions are available in turning mode:
- Taper turning
- Tool compensation
- The traverse path in the X-axis can be displayed either in diameter or in radius.
- It is possible to display Z and Z0 combined, i.e. the travel of the bed slide and the travel of the top slide are displayed in total.
The values can be displayed in mm or inches in all operating modes. It is possible to change the sign when displaying the individual axes. The position indicator has a standby mode. The display brightness, date, time and acoustic signals can be set. A calculator function with memory is also available.
