Correct use of polishing compounds
Sanding and polishing pastes in block form are solid pastes that are suitable for sanding and polishing work using felt or cloth discs and polishing brushes. The blocks are pressed against the rotating discs and soften on the surface due to the frictional heat. This transfers the paste to the disc and produces a clean polish without the centrifugal force detaching it from the rotating disc.
What do the colours of the polishing paste mean?
There are several reasons why polishing pastes are available in different colours:
- The colour is composed of natural ingredients.
- Coloured pigments have been added to the polishing paste to make it easier to distinguish the polishing pastes from one another and thus ensure easier handling.

Which polishing paste is suitable for which metal?
Polishing compounds can be used to polish matt or rough surfaces back to a smooth and shiny finish. Depending on the metal to be processed and the processing step, the polishing pastes are coarse, medium or fine-grained.

Tips for working with polishing pastes
- It is recommended to wear respiratory protection and safety goggles when polishing.
- To avoid a blotchy workpiece surface, the workpiece should always be kept in motion under slight pressure when polishing. For example, the workpiece can be moved slightly in and out of the polishing disc to achieve an even shine.
- Depending on the surface finish, some workpieces should first be processed with sandpaper. As a rule, start with 600 grit sandpaper and then continue with finer grits until no more processing marks are visible on the workpiece.
- The buffing wheel should be cleaned regularly to prevent excess polishing paste and removed material from negatively affecting the workpiece surface during polishing.
- To prevent flash rust on polished metal surfaces, they should be waxed regularly and polished with a cloth.
- As a rule, polishing felt discs are used for pre-polishing and cotton buffing wheels for the final processing step. Sisal cord brushes, on the other hand, are particularly suitable for pre-polishing angled workpieces.
