Correctly setting parting off steel & turning tools - this is how it works.

It is important that the cutting edge of turning tools/cutting tools is set to the correct height, as this is crucial for the surface quality of the finished workpiece. If the turning tool/cutting tool is not set to the height of the workpiece's axis of rotation, this will quickly become apparent during facing.

Possible consequences if the tool is not set correctly:

  • If a stud (see image) remains on the surface of the workpiece, the turning tool/cutting tool is set too low and is below the axis of rotation/centre of the work spindle.

  • If the surface is crowned and the cutting forces are very high, the turning tool/cutting tool is above the axis of rotation/centre of the work spindle.

How to set your parting-off tool/turning tool correctly:

Step 1

Use centre punch

A centre punch inserted in the tailstock can be used to set the turning tool/cut-off tool to the correct height. This is because the tip of a fixed or moving centre point is at the height of the axis of rotation / centre of the work spindle.

Step 2

Adjust the tip of the tool to the height of the centre punch tip

Then move the tailstock to the tool slide and adjust the tip of the turning tool/cutting tool to the height of the centre punch tip.

Step 3

Bring the steel holder to the correct height

If a four-position steel holder is fitted as standard, you must shim (e.g. with shims) until the cutting edge of the turning tool is set to the centre of the work spindle.

With the help of a quick-change steel holder based on the "Multifix" system, setting the correct height is quick and easy using the adjusting screw. In addition, the screw no longer moves once it has been locked. This means you no longer have to readjust the height when installing and removing the steel holder.

To check whether you have set the turning tool/cut-off tool correctly, you can also test it on a round workpiece first. A soft material (e.g. aluminium) is recommended to protect the cutting edge.
