Jonny, what is your exact job title and what are your responsibilities?
I am employed here at paulimot as a technician. In this role, I carry out a wide range of activities: Firstly, I'm responsible for keeping our warehouse tidy and always knowing which machines are in which place. This saves us a lot of time when placing orders. Secondly, I take care of checking and dispatching machines ordered online by our customers. Every morning, my colleagues Ulrich, Jermaine and I receive a stack of reservation slips from our colleagues in the Order Processing and Customer Support team, with each slip representing a customer order. For each order, we first pick the accessories ordered and add them to the machine. We then prepare the entire order for despatch and hand over the complete machine order for the day to the carrier in the afternoon.
You just mentioned that the machines are prepared for dispatch. How exactly do you do this?
In general, we clean all machines as soon as we receive them. We remove excess preservative and thus ensure that the machines arrive clean at the customer's premises. In the second step, all functions of the lathes, milling machines and metal band saws are thoroughly tested to rule out possible defects and ensure that only flawless machines leave our warehouse. All machines that have gone through this process are labelled and then wait in the warehouse for their order. I find this process very useful and it shows how much value is placed on the quality of the machines at paulimot.
You work with our machines every day. Do you have a personal favourite?
I particularly like our large machines, I agree with my technical colleague Ulrich. In terms of lathes, I particularly like the PM4000, our second largest lathe in the range. Some of its special features are the numerous switchable thread pitches or feed speeds or the removable bed bridge. This function allows large parts such as brake discs to be machined. My favourite milling machine is the SIEG SX4. It is our largest and heaviest milling machine and runs extremely quietly despite its size. What I particularly like about this machine is the electric adjustment in the Z-axis and the dynamic control, which also adjusts automatically if necessary.
How did you come to paulimot and what attracted you to the job?
I came to paulimot on Benjamin' s recommendation and started working here in February 2019. Before that, I worked in shifts for years. What appealed to me about the position as a technician at paulimot compared to shift work was the five-day week with regular working hours. In addition to the organisational advantages of the job, it was of course the work itself that appealed to me. Every day I can familiarise myself with the different machines in our range and always learn something new. I also really like the working atmosphere in the company. I'm not seen as a number here, but as a person and there is a very respectful atmosphere, both among colleagues and with my team leader Frank Schlögel. I enjoy going to work every day and that is a very important factor for me. Team-building activities such as our summer party, our Christmas party, the occasional lunch together or ice cream for all employees on hot summer days naturally also contribute to the very informal atmosphere in the company.
Are there any particularly stressful periods of the year for you and your team?
After the Faszination Modellbau trade fair in November, machine orders increase and up to and including March we ship significantly more machines than in the summer months. During this time, not only my colleagues Ulrich, Jermaine and I have a lot to do, but also the logistics team, which is responsible for the daily dispatch of parcels, and the employees in Technical Sales and Customer Support are working flat out. We have a tight schedule, especially on Mondays when we have to process all the orders from the weekend.
Thank you, Jonny, for the insight into your everyday life at paulimot.
