Holder for sharpening turning tools and milling cutters

Builder: Alberto Beggio
Metal holder with several levels and levers on a green surface. Looks like a precision instrument or part of a machine tool.

The project

To sharpen turning tools and milling cutters with a grinding machine, a corresponding holder was produced with the SIEG SX3L milling machine.

Step 1

Dovetail guide

First, a dovetail guide was milled.

A CNC milling machine processes a piece of metal. Chips are lying around. A tool with many cutting edges is visible.
Metal block with dovetail guide is held by one hand. Four drill holes can be seen on one side. A golden ring is visible on the finger.
Step 2

Making a collet chuck

The next step was to make a collet chuck so that individual milling cutters could be clamped later.

A lathe with a clamped workpiece. A milling head is positioned above the workpiece to machine it. Metal chips are lying on the machine table.
A lathe on which metal is machined. The piece of metal is fixed in a collet chuck while a tool works precisely on it.
A silver, cylindrical collet with slots lies in a black gloved hand.
Step 3

Finalising the attachment for the milling cutter

A locking ring and a bush were then produced. With the help of this and the self-made collet chuck, milling cutters can be attached to the holder. Four- or two-edged tools can also be reground using a locking mechanism.

A circular saw cuts into a black, semi-circular piece of metal that is fixed in a vice. Metal shavings are lying around.
Metal part clamped in a lathe. A gold-coloured tool is machining the metal. Chips are visible.
Metalworking: Workpiece in lathe, milling head approaches. Digital display shows coordinate values. Chips are visible.
A hand holds a metal bush with slots. The socket has cylindrical sections of different diameters. The metal appears to be machined.
A metal bushing with three slots at one end is held by a hand; a workbench can be seen in the background.
Close-up of a silver bush with a slot, held by a hand. There is a drill head inside the socket.
Metal construction with milling cutter. A holder fixes a milling cutter, which is aligned horizontally and points to the left. The construction consists of cylindrical and rectangular metal blocks.
Step 4

Finished holder

Both turning tools and milling cutters can be mounted on the finished holder to make it easier to machine them with a grinding machine.

A tool holder with a mounted turning tool on a green surface. The holder is silver with gold and black accents and consists of several adjustable parts.
Metal holder with a milling cutter mounted horizontally in the holder. The holder stands on a multi-stage base with hand cranks. It stands on a green base.
A sanding machine with a pink sanding disc and yellow housing stands on wooden blocks. A holder with a silver plate and adjustment mechanisms underneath is mounted in front of it.
