Stainless steel cable lamp

Builder: Bernhard Kannler
Construction time of the model: 90 to 160 hours (depending on the machines available and the craftsmanship skills)
Scale: 1:1
Total cost: approx. 800 €
Level of difficulty: Advanced
Comparison: CAD illustration and photo of a workstation with desk, mobile pedestal and height-adjustable lamp with tubular steel frame and long lamp body.

The project

This project is a stainless steel support frame for any lamp, which can be constantly adjusted to any height using a wire rope. It is attached to a desk so that the lamp can be moved without being attached to the wall. The stability is guaranteed by the weight of the desk.

Tools used

  • Metal parts (stainless steel) including screws
  • Lamp from the Internet
  • 230V cable, plug
  • junction box
  • Stainless steel wire rope
  • Turning steel
  • milling cutter
  • 4-jaw chuck
  • Parallel clamps
  • Centre drill

Procedure

Step 1

Create the first design

The design for the rope pull lamp was created in CREO (professional CAD tool/programme from Parametric Technology Corporation).

🛈A free CREO Education version is available on the Internet.
All you have to do is register.
However, basic CAD knowledge is required to use it.
CAD representation of a table with lighting system. The table has a recess and purple legs. A green pole holds a yellow lamp.
Depiction of a desk with pendant light and mobile pedestal. The light is attached to a height-adjustable frame. The desk has a corner shape and silver legs.
Step 2

Create drawing

A drawing with the exact dimensions was then created.

You can view the drawing here as a PDF document.

Technical drawing: Workbench with lifting device, consisting of green tubular frame, purple table legs, yellow table top and mechanical lifter with suction cups. Dimensions are marked.
Technical drawing with views, dimensions and details of various components, mainly square or cylindrical shapes. Individual coloured elements highlight details.
Technical drawing: Schematic representation of a piece of furniture with dimensions, consisting of lines, rectangles, circles and numbers on a white background.
Technical drawing of a device with dimensions, views of various components and a rectangular shape highlighted in green.
Technical drawing of a mechanism from the side and from above, consisting of rods, wheels and a plate hanging from a tube.
Technical drawing: grey bar on yellow surface, connected with a long rod to form a complex apparatus.
Technical drawing of a mechanical system with dimensions, top view and side view are shown. Drawn lines and rectangles are in black.
Step 3

Making the support frame

After purchasing the individual parts, the support frame was manufactured using a lathe and a pillar drill, among other things.

Metal construction parts on a workbench, including cuboids, bars, plates and rollers. The parts appear to belong to a larger structure.
Metal construction with screws, nuts and a bracket with a circular opening. A spanner is visible.
Metal construction with screws and bolts on a beige background. The metal part appears to consist of several interconnected components.
Silver-coloured, metallic holder with round recesses and screws. Made up of several levels with a rounded element at the top. Fastening device at the bottom.
Step 4

Connecting the lamp to the support frame

Next, the lamp was connected to the support frame.

Close-up of a lamp mounted on a metal frame with fastening clips on a beige wall. Cables are visible.
A fixture on a yellow wall. A bar is fixed in a vice. On the left side is a construction attached to a power strip and a cardboard box.
Step 5

Attach the lamp

The lamp was then attached to the desk using the support frame.

Metal supports under a desk, connected by pipes. A red measuring device is attached to one support. A red bowl is on the floor next to a support.
A metal rod is fixed under a table with a white surface. The bar stands on a brown surface and is secured by metal clips. White pipes can be seen in the background.
A desk lamp with a silver-coloured, multi-part arm and a brightly shining, elongated lamp body is attached to a rod. The lamp hangs in front of a white wall.
